Green Homes take many forms. Some, such as
those built with natural materials or with a
large solar array on the roof you can
recognize from miles away. However, as green
building creeps into the mainstream, green
homes may look more and more like every other
house on the block.
The homes in this section exemplify the new
generation of green homes, some of which are
certified under the HealthyBuilt Homes Program.
These homes incorporate all or some of the
following green building principles:
Sustainable site development, energy and
water efficiency, responsible resource and
material use and indoor air quality. Examples
include:
- Extensive erosion control
- Protection of existing trees
- Increased insulation
- Use of compact fluorescent lightbulbs
- High efficiency HVAC systems and water
heaters
- Native landscaping
- Low flow water fixtures
- Recycled content insulation, carpet or
decking
- Sustainably harvested wood
- Alternative wall systems
- Low emitting finishes including paints
and stains
- Improved fresh air ventilation
